History
San Antonio, Texas is at the head of the San Antonio River in Bexar County, is on IH 10 and IH 35 and 37.
Tourism is one of the San Antonio's most important industries and draws thousands of visitors every year. Among the features is Fiesta Texas, a family musical and entertainment theme park. Sea World in San Antonio is a marine-life theme park. The famed Riverwalk, Paseo del Rio, consists of miles of cool, shady, walks with shops, cafes, restaurants, and clubs. Tower of the Americas, which has an observation deck and restaurant on top.
Other attractions include the San Antonio Botanical Gardens and Conservatory, El Mercado, the old marketplace with a touch of Mexico; the Sunken Gardens, lush Japanese gardens preserved in a natural setting; the San Antonio Zoo, at Brackenridge Park; the Menger Hotel; the Hertzberg Circus Collection and Museum, and the University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures.
San Antonio's major annual events include Fiesta San Antonio, the San Antonio Annual Livestock Show and Rodeo, the Texas Folk life Festival, and the Riverwalk Christmas Lighting.
The Alamo, Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan Capistrano, and Mission San Francisco de la Espada compose San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, one of a few urban national parks in the country. Architecturally interesting sights abound: San Fernando Cathedral (1758), the Spanish Governor's Palace (1749), the Quadrangle at Fort Sam Houston (1878), and the Bexar County Courthouse (1891).
San Antonio, with its unique architectural heritage dating from the Spanish era, was one of the first cities apart from the Eastern seaboard to become preservation conscious. The San Antonio Conservation Society, was instrumental in saving the beautiful San Antonio River, which winds through downtown.
Recognizing the value and impact of the city's cultural sites upon the economy and stability of the community, the city maintains a Historic Preservation office as part of planning, and has passed a model comprehensive historic-preservation code that provides tax incentives to encourage preservation and rehabilitation.
